Description
The Adoption service is provided within an Integrated Family Placements Service which means that social workers and other staff work alongside foster carers, adopters and other departments and agencies as part of a ‘team around the child’. At any one time we have a number of children, young and older who need permanent adoptive families. Around 50% of the children who need forever families have at least one brother or sister and they want to stay together.
The service recruits, prepares, assesses and supports a diverse range of prospective and approved adopters to meet the individual needs of the children for whom the plan is adoption. We welcome applications from single carers, LGBT or straight, married, living with partner- with or without birth, or adopted children. We need carers who are able to meet the different cultural and religious needs of the children who require adoptive families and welcome applications from BME carers.
An Adoption Support Service is available to all adopters with an allocated social worker both before and after placement and after the Adoption Order in accordance with Adoption Support Regulations 2005. We are a friendly team and pride ourselves on offering bespoke support to meet the particular needs of adoptive families before and after placement- this may include individual or group sessions to prepare for live with a small baby, or financial or other practical or emotional preparation and support to assist with settling siblings into an adoptive placement
All children needing an adoptive family are supported throughout the adoption process and are fully prepared and involved in the process in line with their age and understanding. Birth records counselling is provided for adopted adults and advice is given regarding access to Intermediary services. Assessment, preparation, training and support for people who wish to adopt a child from abroad is provided via referral to other agencies.
