LGBT Adoption & Fostering Week

7 March 2016

Today marks the beginning of LGBT Adoption & Fostering Week (7-13th March).  The event is run by New Family Social, the support group for LGBT adopters and foster carers and agencies across the UK will hold events specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender prospective parents. There will also be flagship events in London and Manchester with workshops, seminars and the opportunity to meet LGBT adopters and foster carers.

The Adoption and Children Act 2002 gave unmarried couples, including same sex couples, the right to adopt, and this became law in December 2005. LGBT couples don’t need to be in a Civil Partnership or married to adopt and single adopters are also welcome whatever their gender or sexual orientation. More information about who is eligible to adopt here.

In 2015, 1 in 12 adoptions were to same-sex couples and there continues to be a desperate need for LGBT foster carers and adopters across the UK with more than 69,000 children still in care. You can find information about adoption information events happening this week and throughout the year here.
