New figures show increase in the number of children awaiting adoption while the number of placement orders has fallen

New data from the Adoption and Special Guardianship Leadership Board shows 1.9% increase in the number of children waiting to be adopted in the UK. The latest figures also reveal a 8% decline in the number of placement orders.

The key headlines from the Q3 20-18/19 Adoption and Special Guardianship Leadership Board:

  • A further increase in the number of children waiting to be adopted in the UK. At the end of December 2018 there were 2750 children waiting with a placement order not yet placed with an adoptive family.
  • The number of placement orders has fallen from 920 in Q2 2018/19 to 850 in Q3 2018/19;
  • Registrations to become an adopter have increased from 800 in Q2 2018/19 to 920 in Q3 2018/19; an increase of 15%
  • The number of families approved for adoption has increased from 670 in Q2 2018/19 to 780 in Q3 2018/19; an increase of 16%
