The adoption support team works with adopted children, adoptive parents, adult adoptees, birth families and special guardians. Working alongside the social workers in the team we have specialist input from a play therapist and an occupational therapist. The team provide support on adoption issues including advice to schools an other professionals. We run training and support events for adopters and undertake individual work with families including life story work. We undertake contact support for children and their birth families post adoption and provide letterbox services as well as intermediary services. We also provide several social events for adoptive families as well as a twice yearly newsletter.

There are 2 adoption assessment teams which cover the County. One team covers the East and the other team covers the West of the County. Both teams recruit and assess individuals and couples who wish to become adoptive parents. Training is provided and support is offered throughout the assessment period and when a child/renĀ is placed, through to an adoption order being granted. The adoption assessment team also work on a voluntary basis with birth parents who wish to relinquish their child/ren for adoption.

The Family Finding team works with children who are aged 3 and over; sibling groups; children with disabilities or attachment issues and children from minority ethnic groups or have any other characteristics which make identifying adoptive placements a complex task. Our social workers will engage the children using specialist techniques in order to complete a profile of their personality, presentation and their needs. These profiles are presented at ‘Children’s Evenings’ or to our local adoption Consortium or through national publicity. We then link and select prospective adoptive parents with the children and prepare them and their foster carers for the transition from foster care to adoption. We support the new placement for the first few weeks until the child and their adoptive parents have successfully completed the transition.
